H.R. 1456 would prohibit federal assistance, such as technical support or access to federal assets, to U.S. film production companies that censor film content to gain approval from the Chinese government. Under the bill, film production companies would be required to inform the Department of State about films that were submitted to the Chinese government for pre-screening and approval. The department would be required to assess whether film content was altered either in response to, or in anticipation of, requests from the Chinese government. Lastly, the bill would require the department to report annually to the Congress on such films and on its actions under the bill.
